What Causes Foot Blisters?

Blisters are fluid-filled bumps that form on the foot, typically in response to stress or trauma to the foot. A blister may be caused by excessive friction or irritation to the foot, as one might experience as a result of playing sports, wearing ill-fitting shoes, or having bones in the feet that are poorly aligned. Too much sun exposure and scalding burns may also cause blisters to form. Other potential causes of blisters are skin infections, such as Athlete’s Foot, and bug bites. Depending on their cause, some types of blisters can heal on their own, while others require medical intervention. Consult with a podiatrist if you have concerns about blisters on your feet.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Dr. John P. Beaupied of Palos Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet is a condition when the arch, the curved part of the sole of your foot, touches the floor when you stand. Flat feet typically occur due to the foot not developing properly during childhood. However, feet may also become flat over time, as daily wear and tear of the foot causes the arch to weaken and fall. In some cases, people with flat feet exhibit no symptoms at all. In other cases, flat feet can cause issues ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain. Left untreated, pain could worsen and cause complications to the knees, hips, and spine. If you have flat feet and are experiencing pain or discomfort, consult with a podiatrist.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Dr. John P. Beaupied from Palos Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Runners May Have Ankle Pain

Ankle pain is a common ailment many runners experience. It can happen to seasoned runners or those who are new to the sport of running. The ankle provides a connection between the ground and the body, and stress may be added to the ankle joints while running. A common symptom that many patients experience with ankle pain can include a stiff Achilles tendon, which connects the heel bone to the calf. Additionally, pain may be felt in the arch, and the entire ankle may feel achy. It is beneficial to wear shoes that fit correctly, and it can help to perform a warm-up that is targeted for the ankles. If you have any type of ankle pain, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you with treatment options.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Dr. John P. Beaupied from Palos Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Common Risk Factors Linked to Corns

Corns, similar to calluses, are hardened layers of dead skin that typically appear in a small, ball-like shape. They can generally be found on the bottom of the feet and sides of the toes. Some patients have found them to be sensitive to the touch, often making it uncomfortable to wear shoes. The reasons why a patient may develop a corn may vary. Common risk factors include wearing shoes that are too tight for your feet, not wearing socks, and walking while barefoot. The causes previously listed all have one factor in common, excess friction that irritates the skin. The removal of a corn can be done by soaking and exfoliating the feet, followed by filing the corn with a pumice stone. For a safe removal process, please seek the professional care of a podiatrist.

If you have any concerns regarding your feet and ankles, contact Dr. John P. Beaupied of Palos Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
